Lemon Verbena or “Louisa” (scientific name: Aloysia citriodora) is a perennial shrub; native to South America, that grows to a height of 2-3 metres. It was brought to Europe by the Spanish and the Portuguese in the 17th century. It is a very aromatic herb and its leaves give out a wonderful lemony scent when infused. It has several therapeutic properties including acting as a nerve tonic, antidepressant, antispasmodic, reducing fevers and helping with digestion. Because of its intense lemony taste, it is also used to add a lemony flavor to fish and poultry dishes, marinades, salad dressings or simply to replace actual lemon in standard tea, as is common with Moroccan tea.
